Entre Cuba y Miami: el manto transnacional de la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre

Abstract

El culto a la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre ha tenido un carácter secular entre los dife- rentes grupos sociales y étnicos desde su mítica aparición en la Bahía de Nipe en 1612. Este artículo intenta examinar la relación y peregrinaje de la Virgen de la Caridad con la migra- ción de los/as cubanos/as entre las fronteras de los Estados Unidos de América y Cuba. El análisis gira en torno a las interconexiones simultáneas entre la migración y distintas mani- festaciones de identidad religiosa, que puede entenderse como un peregrinaje transnacional y translocal. Aunque existen antecedentes históricos del culto a la Virgen de la Caridad fuera del territorio insular desde la segunda mitad del siglo xix, el texto profundizará en la devoción mariana a partir de la inauguración en 1973 de la ermita de la Caridad en Miami, centrándose en las recientes expresiones de fe que han tenido lugar a partir de 2015.

The worship to the Virgin of Charity of Cobre has had a secular character among the different social and ethnic groups since its appearance in the Nipe Bahie in 1612. This paper intends to examinate the relationship and walking of the Virgin of Charity with the migration of Cubans between the borders of the United States of America and Cuba. The analysis deals with the simultaneous interconnections between migration and the different manifestations of religious identity, understood as a transnational and translocal walking. It is true that historical records of its worship exists outside the insular territory since the second half of the xix century, but this paper will make reference to very important issues of the mariana devotion since the beginning in 1973 of la Ermita de la Caridad in Miami, remarking the recent faith expressions that have been held since 2015.
