Transmutaciones del zombi: del vudú haitiano a fenómeno transnacional

Abstract

En la actualidad, la figura del zombi es ampliamente conocida en la mayoría de culturas. Sin embargo, la imagen popularizada en el mundo occidental no se corresponde con el concepto de zombi original, procedente del vudú haitiano y de las creencias religiosas afri- canas. En este trabajo se pretende examinar los motivos por los cuales esta figura experi- mentó una transformación al entrar en contacto con Occidente. Para ello, se investigará el contexto histórico y cultural en el que surge, el concepto de zombi en sus raíces africanas y haitianas, y su popularización en la cultura occidental mediante la literatura y el cine, hasta abordar la configuración del nuevo arquetipo de zombi occidental que mantiene únicamente el concepto de no muerto, así como sus múltiples interpretaciones y su papel en la cultura de masas transnacional.

Today, the figure of the zombie is widely known in most cultures. However, the image that is popularized in The Western world does not correspond to the original concept of the zombie, derived from Haitian voodoo and African religious beliefs. The aim of this work is to examine the reasons why this figure underwent a transformation when it came into contact with The West. To do this, the historical and cultural context in which it arises, the concept of the zombie in its African and Haitian roots, its popularization in The Western culture through literature and film will be investigated, until addressing the configuration of the new Western zombie archetype, which maintains only the concept of the undead- as well as its multiple interpretations and its role in transnational mass culture.
