La representación del espacio en los libros de viajes medievales: geografía mítica, sagrada y maravillosa (ss. XIII-XV)

Abstract

In this paper we analyze the representation of space in medieval travel books, examining the mythical, sacred and wonderful geography. First, we study the concept of space in the Middle Ages, reviewing the symbolism and perceptions that are forged with their society. Second, we analyze the mythical, sacred, and wonderful elements in the description of the geography of European travellers, considering their discourses and narrative intentions. Finally, the travellers describe the space as symbolic constructions in which real and imaginary perceptions merge. Therefore, travellers transmit geographic, historical, and religious knowledge, which is significant as an expression of their memory and cultural identity, and with which they define their representation of the world.

En el estudio analizamos la representación del espacio en los libros de viajes medievales, examinando la geografía mítica, sagrada y maravillosa. Primero, estudiamos el concepto de espacio en la Edad Media, revisando los simbolismos y percepciones que se forjan con su sociedad. Segundo, analizamos los elementos míticos, sagrados y maravillosos en la descripción de la geografía por parte de los viajeros europeos, considerando sus discursos e intencionalidades narrativas. Finalmente, los viajeros describen los espacios como cons- trucciones simbólicas en las que se funden las percepciones reales e imaginarias. Así, los viandantes transmiten un conocimiento geográfico, histórico y religioso, el que resulta significativo como expresión de su memoria e identidad cultural, y con el cual definen su representación del mundo.
