La participación estudiantil en un centro de Educación Secundaria de Canarias

Abstract

La adolescencia es una etapa de transición evolutiva en la que la juventud puede, con el ambiente adecuado, alcanzar un desarrollo saludable y servir de recurso social a la sociedad. La escuela, como contexto capaz de potenciar este desarrollo y uno de los principales encargados de su educación, tiene un papel fundamental en la formación de los y las futuras ciudadanas de una sociedad democrática y, por ello, es vital que emplee prácticas de participación estudiantil. Para estudiar el estado actual de estas prácticas y su manera de impulsarlas desde el propio alumnado, se ha llevado a cabo un estudio para explorar diversos aspectos relacionados con este tópico (p.e., concepto de participación, acciones participativas desarrolladas en el aula y en el centro, nivel de implicación que desearían tener o motivaciones para la participación). Esta investigación se enmarca en un enfoque de Aprendizaje-Servicio (ApS) respondiendo a una necesidad planteada por el centro de promover la participación activa de su estudiantado. La muestra estuvo constituida por un total de 164 adolescentes (52,7% chicas y 45,5% chicos), 118 de Educación Secundaria Obligatoria (ESO) y 46 de 1º curso de Bachillerato, de un centro educativo de la isla de Tenerife. La información se recopiló mediante un cuestionario online y dos grupos de discusión. El alumnado entiende la participación en término de valores y acciones, sobre todo según avanzamos a través de los cursos. Además, el centro promueve la participación, pero tiene aspectos a mejorar a nivel de convivencia, gestión del centro, implicación académica y presencia del instituto en el tiempo libre del alumnado. Se encuentran diferencias en estos aspectos relacionadas con el género, la asunción de algún tipo de responsabilidad en el centro y la etapa educativa. Se han desarrollado una serie de propuestas prácticas con el fin de dar impulso a prácticas participativas. Adolescence is a stage of evolutionary transition in which youth can, with the right environment, achieve healthy development and serve as a social resource for society. School, as a context capable of fostering this development and one of the main agents in charge of their education, has a fundamental role in the formation of future citizens of a democratic society and, therefore, it is vital that it employs practices of student participation. In order to study the current state of these practices and the way they are promoted by the students themselves, a study was carried out to explore various aspects related to this topic (e.g., concept of participation, participatory actions developed in the classroom and in the center, level of involvement they would like to have or motivations for participation). This research is frame within Service-Learning (SL) approach, responding to a need posed by the center to promote the active participation of its students. The sample consisted of a total of 164 adolescents (52.7% girls and 45.5% boys), 118 in Compulsory Secondary Education and 46 in the first year of Bachillerato, from an educational center on the island of Tenerife. The information was collected by means of an online questionnaire and two discussion groups. The students understand participation in terms of values and actions, especially as we advance through the courses. In addition, the center promotes participation, but has aspects to improve at the level of coexistence, center management, academic involvement and presence of the institute in the students' free time. Differences are found in these aspects related to gender, the assumption of some type of responsibility in the center and the educational stage. A series of practical proposals have been developed with the aim of promoting participatory practices.
