workplace that ends with an emotional and physical wear, specially in the health staff.
Thus, there are external factors that predispose people to suffer the Burnout
Syndrome: one of them is the enviroment generated by a pacient’s death. This study
wants to analize, firstly, how a patient’s death afects the health personnel of the Canary
Island Health Service in Tenerife. Sencondly, study if there is relation between the
affectation due to the patient’s death and the Burnout Syndrome. A pilot study was
carried out with a sample of 29 people from the nursing staff (nurses and nursing
assistants) from Tenerife through a survey divided into four parts: sociodemographic
data, questions related to experience with death, the COPE-28 questionary about
coping strategies and the MBI questionary about Burnout Syndrome. The results,
obteined with IBM SPSS Statistics, shows that the health personnel are negatively
afected by the death of a patient, althougt no statistically significative relation is showed
between Burnout Syndrome and the impact of patient’s death in the health personnel.
These results are not representative, so it would be necessary to expand the sample
size. Finally, the benefits that the development of a study like this would have to detect
needs and improve the quality of the Canarian Health Service are highlighted.
