Abstract

La idea de emigrar siempre ha estado presente a lo largo de la historia. Ya desde los siglos xvii y xviii, fueron muchos los que intentaron buscar fortuna en el Nuevo Mundo. Uno de los más destacados fue el icodense Marcos de Torres, conocido por la fundación de la ermita de las Angustias, imagen que trajo de América junto con todas las piezas del ajuar y ornato del templo. Pero no solo dotó este recinto, sino que realizó otras obras importantes para la historia de la comarca, beneficiando a sus vecinos y enriqueciendo los templos de Icod, quedando como la personalidad que cumplía todos los requisitos para engrandecer el mito del emigrante que regresa con fortuna.
