Abstract

The opening of the new world brought about the disclosure of realities which had so far remained ignored or barely guessed at. Among them, the animal realm, and its representation, either in its material or symbolic significance, stands as a crucial chapter. This article will be dealing with it at the outset of the western exploration process, in the areas encompassed between the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Guinea. We shall be considering travel narratives that show the amazement of Europeans at the unexpected events and wonders displayed before their eyes. Such an enterprise unfolds broadly throughout the fifteenth century, comprising the three large areas of Macaronesia, Sahara and Guinea.

La apertura al nuevo mundo significó el descubrimiento de realidades hasta entonces igno- radas o poco conocidas. Uno de sus capítulos es el de los animales, tanto en su presentación real como simbólica. Nos ocuparemos de él en su primer ámbito de exploración, el que se extendía desde el Estrecho de Gibraltar hasta el Golfo de Guinea; y lo haremos funda- mentalmente a través de los relatos de viaje, que muestran la sorpresa de los europeos ante las novedades y maravillas que se ofrecían a sus ojos. Esta empresa abarca, grosso modo, el siglo xv y distingue tres grandes unidades: Macaronesia, Sahara y Guinea.
