Islas. Un archipiélago semiótico

Abstract

El ensayo explora el ser-isla a través de una mirada semiótico-cultural. Después de abordar la íntima tensión entre finitud e infinitud, que constantemente caracteriza la condición insular, mediante el análisis de diversas experiencias y materiales, el argumento postula la presencia de cuatro vectores de significado, cuatro relaciones fundamentales: aquella entre la isla y el mar, entre la isla y el continente, entre la isla con otras islas y entre la isla consigo misma. Estos vectores, por un lado, ayudan a comprender y aclarar la riqueza histórica y fenomenológica de la vida de y en las islas. Por otro lado, se presentan como modelos de espacialidad e identidad que trascienden la mera dimensión insular.

The essay explores the being-island through a cultural semiotic perspective. After accounting for the intimate tension between finiteness and infinitude, which constantly characterizes the island condition, through the analysis of various experiences and materials, the argument reveals the existence of four vectors of meaning, four fundamental relations: that between the island and the sea, between the island and the continent, of the island with other islands, of the island with itself. These vectors, on the one hand, help to grasp and clarify the historical and phenomenological richness of life of and on the islands. On the other hand, they offer models of spatiality and identity that transcend the mere insular dimension.
