Islas al viento. Cuando los norteamericanos quisieron Canarias

Abstract

Cuando en 1898 se desató la guerra entre España y los Estados Unidos hubo un episodio de esta contienda que se desarrolló en Canarias. Las islas no llegaron a ser atacadas, pero sí vivieron el estrés y se prepararon para la guerra ante las repetidas amenazas que profirieron los norteamericanos. En Canarias no había condiciones para enfrentar a las escuadras de EE.UU. y solo el fanatismo de la clase dirigente y de los militares soñaba con victorias impo- sibles. El episodio mostró las duras condiciones de subdesarrollo que soportaron las clases populares y el abandono en que los gobiernos de Madrid tenían a las islas.

When the war between Spain and the United States broke out in 1898 there was an episode of this conflict that took place in the Canary Islands. The islands were not attacked, but they did experience stress and prepared for war in the face of repeated threats by the Amer- icans. In the Canary Islands, there were no conditions to face the US squads and only the fanaticism of the ruling class and the military dreamed of impossible victories. The episode showed the harsh conditions of underdevelopment that the popular classes endured and the abandonment in which the governments of Madrid had the islands.
