La primera imagen de las Islas Canarias en la Naturalis Historia de Plinio el Viejo

Abstract

Este texto pretende ser una contribución complementaria a los numerosos estudios y análisis que se han hecho sobre el texto de Plinio el Viejo sobre las Fortunatae Insulae. Nos referiremos a un conjunto de aspectos que, en nuestra opinión, son los mejores para definir y caracterizar estas islas y nos permitirán confirmar la realidad de lo descrito en el texto de Plinio. Por otra parte, buscamos poner de relieve que la información contenida en el texto tiene una estructura coherente, como se deduce de la forma en que se describen los aspectos geográficos más notables de las Islas Canarias en la antigüedad.

The present text tries to be a complementary contribution to the many studies and analysis that have been made on Pliny the Elder’s text concerning Fortunatae Insulae. We will refer to a group of aspects that, in our opinion, are the best to define and characterize these islands and will allow us to confirm the reality of what has been described in the Plinian text. On the other hand, we will try to highlight that the information stated in the text has a coherent structure, as inferred from the way it is described most notable geographical features of the Canary Islands in Ancient Times.
