Conflict and ritual convergence. Comparison between the finals of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores and the UEFA champions league (2000 2017)

This article is the culmination of a line of work on sports media rituals in
football at club level. We explore the evolution of these rituals in the finals
of the two main continental competitions worldwide: the UEFA
Champions League in Europe and the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores in
South America. We will compare the two competitions to try to understand whether there is a pattern of transformation in their rituals and to
what extent a process of homogenization is taking place. We anticipate
that such homogenization is taking place, in a conflictive relationship with
places and within a broader process of transformation that is changing the
nature of rituals, parallel to the consolidation of new global tribes that are
created and developed under the protection of media globalization.
