MXenes in electrocatalysis
Date
2024Abstract
Herein, the general concepts of low-temperature fuel cells and electrolyzers are discussed, with particular attention to MXene-based electrocatalysts. Low-temperature fuel cells in conjunction with electrolyzers are crucial technologies for the desired hydrogen economy since they have the potential to provide clean energy to portable devices, transportation, and stationary sectors. To solve the principal catalytic problems, the anode and the cathode of these devices, a fundamental study of the mechanism and kinetics of hydrogen and oxygen evolutions, as well as oxygen reduction on MXene-based catalysts in a wide pH range are discussed. Consequently, the aim of the present chapter is not only to provide new advances in MXene-based materials but also to understand the reactions occurring at fuel cell and electrolyzer catalysts, which may help to improve the fabrication of novel electrodes to decrease the cost and enhance the performance of these devices.
