Cien años de una fascinación olvidada: Ben-Hur. A Tale of the Christ (Fred Niblo, 1925)

Abstract

Los años previos a la llegada del cine sonoro recogen importantes ejemplos de películas ambientadas en el mundo antiguo. Entre todos esos títulos destaca Ben-Hur. A Tale of the Christ,dirigida por Fred Niblo en el año 1925 y con el actor Ramón Novarro como protagonista absoluto. Teniendo como excusa que en 2025 se celebran los cien años desde su estreno, queremos reivindicar en estas páginas la película de Niblo como uno de los films más impor- tantes realizado en los años del cine silente, y no solo del que se ocupa de la Antigüedad. La reconstrucción histórica y la espectacularidad de muchas de sus escenas no ocultan el hecho de que Ben-Hur sea ante todo un film religioso con un mensaje proselitista del cristianismo.

The years prior to the arrival of talkies collect important examples of films set in the ancient world. Among all these titles, Ben-Hur. A Tale of the Christ, directed by Fred Niblo in 1925 and with the actor Ramón Novarro as the absolute protagonist. Having as an excuse that, in 2025, one hundred years will be celebrated since its premiere, we want to claim in these pages Niblo’s film as one of the most important films made in the years of silent cinema, and not only the one that deals with Antiquity. The historical reconstruction and the spectacular nature of many of its scenes do not hide the fact that Ben-Hur is above all a religious film with a proselytizing message for Christianity.
