Estado, renta del suelo y concentración del turismo en la costa sur de Nayarit (México): 1970‐2023

Abstract

El estudio de Bahía de Banderas en el occidente de México permite ejemplificar lo sucedido en las zonas turísticas del país desde hace varias décadas. Expondremos cómo las políticas neoliberales contribuyeron generar un auge turístico residencial y de segundo hogar mediante la concentración territorial del capital turístico y un fenómeno de dualidad social. Basaremos la investigación en un estudio de caso con datos oficiales, revisión de documentos legales, entrevistas, prensa digital y páginas web para venta y renta de terrenos y casas; la principal conclusión a la que llegaremos es que el excedente económico fuente del crecimiento de las inversiones turísticas está fundado en la privatización de tierras expropiadas, las rentas y precios que generan, al desarrollo de las comunicaciones, la depreciación del peso mexicano y el control.

Bahía de Banderas in western Mexico exemplifies what has happened in the country’s tourist hubs for several decades. We highlight the role of neoliberal policies that have contributed to generating a second ‑home tourism boom through the territorial concentration of tourism capital and the phenomenon of social dualism. We base the research on official data, legal documents and interviews, together with digital press and websites for selling and renting land and houses. The main conclusion we reach is that the economic surplus that is the source of the growth of tourism investments is based on the privatisation of expropriated land, the rents and prices they generate, the development of communications, the depreciation of the Mexican peso and the economic dominance of tourism.
