El nombre de Tenerife

Abstract

El fuerte impacto ejercido por las religiones en todas las culturas tuvo como resultado la asignación de númenes o divinidades epónimas tanto a los individuos como a los grupos, los asentamientos humanos y un gran número de accidentes del terreno, en especial los más conspicuos y destacados, como montañas, cuevas, ríos, etc. Frecuentemente estos nombres no son descriptivos, sino teofóricos. Este es, en nuestra opinión, el origen del nombre Tenerife. A este efecto nos basamos en las conexiones del radical Tin, etc., con antiguas divinidades de similar función, en especial del ámbito mediterráneo y norteafricano.

One of the effects of the strong impact exerted by religion in all cultures is the presence of personal and tribal names, as well as of their settlements, often based on theonymes. This includes a long list of place-names, especially the most conspicuous ones, such as mountains, caves, rivers, etc. Often, such names are not descriptive, but based on the name of a related genius or divinity. This is also, in my opinion, the origin of the name Tenerife, as the result of a comparative research of the radical Tin, etc., with the names of old divinities with similar functions, particularly in the Mediterranean and North-African field.
