AB Safety of patients in the operating room is an objective of the health institutions andprofessionals that work in this area. Within surgical patients, half of the adverse eventsoccur within the operating room, and "foreign body retention after surgery" has beenidentified as one of them. The main objective of this study is to know the figures ofmaterial lost in the years 2011 - 2016 at the University Hospital of the Canary Islands,to know the figures of adverse events related to retention of instruments, to explore theexperience of the nursing staff working in the operating room and the degree ofcompletion of the associated documentation. The results show that 1.5 pieces are lostdaily; the clip that is most lost is the "mosquito"; there are no records of adverse eventsreported in the hospital and the degree of completion of the count as correct is high. Ithas not been possible to relate the experience of the personnel with the loss ofelements. The implementation of a documented procedure would help the operatingroom nursing team, both veterans and new ones, to establish it as a regular practice intheir tasks. It is necessary to raise awareness and training of staff by the institution inrelation to this issue, in order to provide a more secure service to our users.
