This paper will analyze theimportance of water for the Byzantine world in general and will deal with the use of bathsin particular. Following Roman architectural models, in the first centuries of the Byzantineperiod public baths (thermae) were constructed. In the Middle Byzantine period, however, one can perceive a significative decrease in the number of such public buildings as well as inthe spreading of private baths. The interest in the use of baths in B yzantine times is r eflected on sources of various kinds, such as architecture, medicine and literature, complemented by a rich iconography of the subject.
