AB The following pages are the result of our continuous reflections about themedieval texts in Arabic and the analises that are frequently subjected to. Althougno pretension of originality furthers our approach, we intend to look at thesealready studied pieces from a different perspective and to establish a »new order».Consequently, we have chosen as the object of the present research Al-ŷāhiz’sKitāb al-H ayawān (Book of the Animals), as text every scholar is wellacquainted with. We propose to analyze the generic and contextual foundationsof this work as the mainstays supporting the erection of the book to the categoryof an Islamic Arabic Encyclopedia
