Energy Intensityis the most used economic indicator in order to approximate energy efficiency. In the literature, different variables have been used to explain the evolution of this indicator, such as economicgrowth, industrialization, energy prices and, in some cases, the urbanization rate –due to itsrecent growing trend. This work aims to examine the possible relationship between urbanizationand energy intensity for 30 OECD countries drawing upon annual data between 1975 and 2010.In order to do this, a multiple linear regression is conducted. The estimated coefficients revealthat the urbanization rate performs a positive effect in the short term (i.e., the higher urbanizationrate, the higher the EI). However, in the long term, this relationship takes a negative effect (i.e.,the higher the urbanization rate, the lower the EI).
