Critical analyses of written andvisual texts from this period require the self-conscious adoption of a de-centered, prolepticviewpoint, inspired by current theoretical debates. This essay traces a discontinuous itinerary of twentieth-century critical medievalism, and it engages Fernand Braudel’s notion oflongue durée, and Michel Foucault’s concept of genealogy. Ultimately, the essay seeks tocomplicate Eurocentric discourses on the «origin» of the Canary Islands and the archipelagos of the Caribbean featured in early European imaginings of the New World.
