Its leitmotiv is thewithdrawal of the mythical interpretation so far given to this geographical space, shaped bypoetic fancy, and the subsequent development of practical knowledge fostered by exploratory voyages. The experience achieved in the course of these centuries altered the ideas thatso far had prevailed about the features of such a sea, as well as about the conditions requiredfor sea navigation, the possibilities of trespassing its frontiers, the reach of its treasures andthe rights of exploitation over the latter.
