The maximum entropy principle is described, as well as its implementation in the Maxent software. In addition, demonstrative exercises of species modeling are presented by using five threatened bird species of Ecuador with Maxent: Andigena laminirostris and Ramphastos ambiguus (Ramphastidae), Campephilus gayaquilensis (Picidae), Cephalopterus penduliger (Cotingidae) and Pyrrhura albipectus (Psittacidae). Each potential species’ distribution was modeled by using both current climate data and future predictions under a climatic change scenario, based on RCP 6.0 setups for 2050 and 2070 in order to examine the potential impact of global warming on the species’ distribution. The strategies that these species would adopt in the face of climate change are also inferred and finally, based on insular biogeography theory, we compare the fragmentation degree and the edge effect susceptibility of their potential distributions.
