AB This study is based on Stern's VCN model, used to explain behaviors, in thiscase frugality, defined as voluntary restriction behavior and resourceful use ofresources. According to the model, the ecological behavior can be explainedfrom the values, the general beliefs about the environment, the degree ofawareness of the problem, the ascription of responsibility and the personalnorm, which is considered as the direct determinant of the behavior. Theobjectives of this work are to verify what variables of the VCN Model predictfrugal behavior in a population of 51 athletes and to check if there aredifferences in frugal behavior according to sex and the type of sport practiced.In this study, the NEP and NHIP scales are used to measure general beliefsabout the environment, because of their predictive capacity on frugal behavior.The results of the multiple regression point to the personal norm as the variable 4that explains the frugal behavior to a greater extent. And the analysis ofvariance shows that women who practice collective sports are more frugal thanmen, contrary to what happens in individual sports.
