AB Anxiety disorders in children represent one of the most prevalent disorders in today'ssociety. Throughout the period of childhood, and even more at very young ages, it is verycommon for children to express fear or discomfort when they are separated from theirattachment figures, usually from their parents. This anxiety experienced by children can varyalong a continuum from experiencing a malaise or anxiety that has an adaptive value, toexperiencing a persistent discomfort or disproportionate and maladaptive anxiety, and thereforepathological. 4In the present work it is proposed to establish the difference between separationanxiety, which is part of the normal evolutionary course, and separation anxiety disorder,considered pathological. Also, different evaluation methods and treatments that have proven tobe more effective for separation anxiety disorder are exposed.
