This is a legislative initiative initiated severalyears ago by the European Commission, which aims to adapt thelegislation on copyright to a new reality marked by the evolution ofdigital technologies, establishing a uniform legal framework that allowsadequate protection of intellectual property in the digital environmentof the European Union. However, this new chapter of adaptation of theregulation on intellectual property to technological change, as inprevious occasions, is marked by the complexity that characterizes andsurrounds this issue of copyright. So much so that the Proposal for aDirective has met with numerous obstacles from the very beginning ofits processing to its final approval, motivated by both the existingpressures and the rejection it has suffered from public opinion, whichconsidered that some of their proposals posed a threat to freedom ofexpression on the Internet. After its final approval, once it has beentransposed into the national legislations of the different member states,it will remain to be seen what consequences its application will have inthe digital environment.
