Both, contraceptive action and side effects areattributed to the Cu2+ ions release resulting from a corrosion mechanism. In order to evaluate the corrosion resistance of copper, an electrochemical study of thismetal has been performed in a simulated intrauterine environment (38 ºC) at different pHconditions, using polarization techniques and surface analysis. The corrosion productsresulting from a prolonged exposure in the simulated solution were also identified byscanning electron microscopy and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDX).The results revealed that, although there is a significant initial release of Cu2+ ions, inparticular under acidic environment, a layer of copper oxides develops on the surface withthe elapse of time, providing anti-corrosive protection. After several days/weeks ofimmersion in the aggressive solution, this insulating layer, formed by multilayers of patinaswith inclusions and ions from the simulated intrauterine solution, offers some protectionagainst further degradation, thereby diminishing but not totally impeding the materialdegradation and the release of copper.
