AB Spirulina is a multicellular cyanobacteria that has been consolidated as a dietary supplement.Although the components of nutritional interest (proteins, polyunsaturated fatty acids, macroand micronutrients) have been studied, there are no studies on toxic metals. This study determines and toxicologically evaluates Al, Cd and Pb concentrations in 24 samplesfrom 7 different brands marketed in Spain using ICP-OES.The highest average levels of Al(39,899 mg/Kg) and Cd(51,989 µg/Kg) were obtained for thebrand 6 and Pb(145,559 µg/Kg) for brand 2.Considering the posology guidelines, the average intakes have been estimated and theircontributions to Tolerable Weekly Intake (TWI).The greatest contribution has been observed for Al(2,04%) followed by Cd(1,05%). The intakeof Pb from Spirulina represent 1,05% of the intake associated with nephrotoxicity and 0,44% ofthe intake associated with cardiovascular effects.Spirulina consumption does not pose a risk to the consumer as far as exposure to toxic metalsconcerned, but the presence of toxic metals in Spirulina preparations should be regulated toensure their quality and safety, thus contributing to the recommendation to minimize theexposure to toxic metals from different dietary sources.
