The biosynthesis of natural products, also known as secondary metabolites,is related to the interaction of plants with their environment and with natural selection. With the objective of carrying out a phytochemical study and isolating some of thesecondary metabolites present in the Canarian endemism Smilax canariensis Willd(family Smilacaceae), the n-butanol extract (intermediate polarity) was extracted fromfresh leaves and stems, which fractionated using different chromatographic techniquesuntil finally obtaining the pure products. The interpretation of the spectroscopic data obtained by the application of differentspectroscopic techniques allowed the structural elucidation of 5 compounds: quercetin- 3-O-rutinose (rutin) 1, quercetin-3-O-rutinose decaacetate 1a, kaempferol-3-O-rutinosenonaacetate 2, trans-resveratrol 3 and 1-O-p-coumaroylglycerol triacetate 4.Finally, it was carried out in a bibliographic study of the biological activities andtherapeutic applications of isolated natural products.
