A1 Quintana Mulet, Daniel K1 Cluster Regulated Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats, CRISPR-Cas9, Inmunoterapia AB The called Cluster Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats technology and itsassociated genes, known by the acronym CRISPR-Cas9, is a genetic editing tool developed overthe last decade due to its high potential use on medical research. For a long time, it was simplyconceived as a repeating element within bacterial genome, responsible for granting immunity toits carrier against external genetic material invasion. However, progress on genetic engineeringhas given CRISPR-Cas9 the ability to become an editable technology of great interest for itsmedical approach. One of its applications resides in immunotherapy, or biological therapy. Theseare aimed at stimulating immune system in order to fight diseases such as AIDS or cancer, inwhich immunological defences are weakened. There are various techniques, such as adoptivecell transfer or gene knockout, in which CRISPR-Cas9 is especially useful.General applications of CRISPR-Cas9 in the immunotherapeutic approach will be brieflydescribed and its mechanism of action against HIV will be developed.
