RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Foreignising vs. Domesticating?: The Role of Cultural Context in Determining the Choice of Translation Strategy A1 Kujamäki, Pekka A1 Jääskeläinen, Riitta K1 extranjerización K1 domesticación K1 traducción de literatura K1 estrategias de traducción AB The recent arguments in Translation Studies for the adoption of a foreignising strategy in(literary) translation have come mainly from Anglo-American culture, most notably Law-rence Venuti. He argues persuasively for cultural enrichment via foreignisation. However, adifferent picture emerges when one looks at the issue from the point of view of smalllanguages/cultures. Indeed, the definition of what constitutes foreignisation depends onthe cultural context. We will illustrate our point by discussing the notion of translationstrategy and its influence on translators’ decision-making. We will also discuss examplesfrom the history of translation in Finland as well as a recent translation project of heavyrock lyrics from Finnish into German. PB Universidad de La Laguna.
