This syndrome has a high morbidity and mortality and associates to high health expenditure that concerns Public Health agencies. Therefore, research in search of therapies that allow to prevent, diagnose and treat this syndrome more effectively are of great relevance. In this search, several novel hypotheses have emerged, such as the possible relationship between the development of Metabolic Syndrome with elevated levels or the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone, its relation to other hormones such as glucocorticoids or thyroid hormones, its influence on controlling gluconeogenesis, or the role that the mineralocorticoid receptor plays in these processes. This work will analyze data currently available from various studies, in order to establish whether the mineralocorticoid receptor may or may not be a firm candidate as a therapeutic target in the treatment of the Metabolic Syndrome.
