A1 Sánchez Lorenzo, María Dolores K1 Diabetes mellitus AB The hyperglycaemia characteristic of type 2 diabetes mellitus is caused because metabolism is unable to change fuel or overexpression of sodium-glucosecotransporters-2. The background therapy is to improve eating habits and sports practice, but usually the pharmacological treatment is needed to achieve normoglycemia. Over the past few years, sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor have joined to the classic treatment, whose use is based on increased lipolysis and the generation of ketone bodies as more efficient fuels for mitochondria, contributing to both cardiac and renal benefits. The SGLT2i favour in the mitochondria the change of fission to a state of sustained fusion and to theimprovement of autophagy and lysosomal degradation by inhibition of mTORC1, this showing improvement not only in blood glucose levels, but also in blood pressure and body weight loss. Therefore, it is believed that these types of drugsproduce in this area an enhanced nocturnal catabolism, this is useful in both obese and insulin-resistant. Their effect on mitochondrial dysfunction are expanding their use in other types of diseases.
