AB Nowadays, plastic pollution poses one of the greatest threats to the marine and coastalenvironment, the consumption and resulting abandonment of these materials becoming a majorglobal problem. Within these plastic wastes, the so-called microplastics (<5 mm) are rapidlygaining importance. This subgroup of plastic is frequently used in different industrial processesor can be generated from the fragmentation of larger plastics or macroplastics. The mainproblem related to microplastics results of their ability to integrate in the food chain where theydevelop a high potential to damage the biota. This work was mainly focused on a bibliographic review of the different studies on thepresence of microplastics carried out on Canary Islands beaches in order to relate theirabundance to environmental factors such as the location, orientation and sedimentologicalcharacteristics of the beaches or the ocean currents.
