For this reason, these wounds should be properly managed with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs to prevent infections, revert the stablished inflammatory environment and promote wound healing. The main objective of the present study is to obtain microspheres capable of incorporating an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory serving as controlled release systems. Microspheres were prepared using copolymers of different nature in order to evaluate the polymers effect on drug encapsulation efficiency and therapeutic molecules release profiles. The results showed the encapsulation efficiency is high for both drugs (> 80%) and independent of the selected copolymer. However, regarding drug release profile significant differences were found depending on the polymer used. The release rate is slower when high molecular weight polymers are used (ciprofloxacin microspheres), unlike low molecular weight polymers (indomethacin microspheres), which presented more of a burst release phenomenon. The combination of both types of microspheres would make possible to obtain dual-release wound dressings for anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics with different release profiles.
