AB This research analyzes the European Union enlargement process towards the westernBalkans and, specifically, the accession of Albania and North Macedonia, since these arethe only Balkan countries with which the EU has already started accession negotiations.This enlargement process is long and complex, and in order for them to be carried out,these countries must fulfill a whole series of conditions and membership criteria requiredby the founding Treaties. Furthermore, the EU can also impose specific accessionrequirements, and this is what has happened with these countries. In this way, theEuropean Union ensures that the countries aspiring to enter in this internationalorganization are in optimal conditions for it, respecting the fundamental values of the EU,and meeting the objectives proposed by it.
