AB This work focuses on the suq, the souk, as an essential element in the Arabian Muslimcivilization. The assessment regards souks both as physical loci and as economic and socialinstitutions, paying attention also to the possible models of insertion of souks into urbanwebs, to their inner organization, and to the main participants and regulators of theirtrading activities, as well as to other relevant issues. The analysis of documentary evidenceconcerning souks is also carried out, namely that of the hisba tracts, originally conceived forthose civil servants in charge of welfare at the souk. These sources comprise all sorts ofinformation and data about the souk structure, organization and activies, as well as aboutmethods to detect delinquency and instructions for crime control.
