RT info:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesis T1 Diversity and conservation of climbing plants in Macaronesia: a minireview and a preliminary genetic study on the endemic genus semele A1 Suárez Fuentes, Rafael Jesús A2 Máster Universitario en Biodiversidad Terrestre y Conservación en Islas AB Climbing plants (lianas and vines) conform one of the most intriguing, but also neglectedfunctional plant groups, despite, in the recent years, they have progressively attractedmore attention from the research community due to their important ecological roles. Thus, the recent mounting interest has led to a better comprehension to the roles that these plantsplay in their environments. However, the climbing functional group of many floristicregions, namely on islands, remain largely understudied. This is particularly true for fieldslike dispersal ecology, evolution or conservation biology. The present Master Thesis isdivided in two sections, where first we provide a preliminary Macaronesian climbingplant list, assessing their diversity and conservation status. In total, we found 67 climbingspecies and 14 families across the Azorean, Madeiran, Selvagens and the Canarianarchipelagos, and discussed aspects related to their ecology and threats. In the secondsection of this Master thesis, and on the foundation that a few genetic studies have beenperformed on Macaronesian climbing species, we investigate the genetic structure patternof the climbing genus Semele, in order to shed light into its evolutionary history anddiversity. We applied Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies to the design ofmicrosatellite markers. Our preliminary results point to a marked genetic structure amongislands, identifying significant levels of admixture within Tenerife and of Tenerife withrespect to La Palma populations. These findings also seem to support the existence of twospecies in the Canary Islands YR 2021 FD 2021 LK http://riull.ull.es/xmlui/handle/915/23146 UL http://riull.ull.es/xmlui/handle/915/23146 LA en DS Repositorio institucional de la Universidad de La Laguna RD 03-may-2024
