Over the last few decades, natural breastfeeding in Spain has increased up to a 28 % at the time the baby is 6 months old. However, these results are long way from the ideal results recommended by the WHO, which is precisely why we should increase the number of interventions to improve the breastfeeding rates. The aim of this project is to increment the levels of self-sufficiency of first-time mothers, in order to improve the rates of natural breastfeeding by using a website.Aim: to determine if an intervention program intended to increase the levels of self-sufficiency in first-time mothers is able to improve the length of breastfeeding.Design: intervention study (pre-post), it being controlled and randomized.Setting: this study begins at the Hospital Universitario de Canarias (HUC), a Hospital Complex situated in La Laguna, Tenerife. This project can be followed on the website “Amadrina a una primeriza.” The purpose of this online platform is to allow the first-time mothers to communicate with their godmothers, this process belonging to the group of intervention.Study Subjects: 75 first-time mothers will be needed in each group, allowing a 5% chance for a Type I error and a 20% chance of a Type II error. The participants will be randomly assigned to the group of control or to the group of intervention.Working Tools: within the first 48 hours after labor and with the prior consent of the women involved, the mothers of both groups (control and intervention) have to complete the form of the official Spanish version of the self-sufficiency scale. The same data is given to them again after a period of 1, 3 and 6 moths after labor. The women in the group of intervention are provided with a security key and, later, incorporated to the website, where they can be advised by experienced mothers (godmothers).A breastfeeding godmother is an experienced mother who volunteers to support and advise a first-time mother during the breastfeeding process, making possible for the latter to enjoy a direct support online through one-to-one conversations. The godmother and the first-time mother communicate with each other via chat, these conversations being supervised by the investigators in charge of the website management. The mothers in the control group will not have access to the website and, consequently, will not be advised by experienced mothers.Determinations: The following variables will be registered: group (control or intervention), age of the mother, marital status, educational levels, previous contact with breastfeeding, level of support of family and friends, type and length of breastfeeding (exclusive, prevailing, partial), assessment of the self-sufficiency scale. The latter will serve as an evaluating guide for the interventions carried out in the experimental group with the intention of ameliorating what needs to be improved. The data tables will be drawn up using Microsoft Excel, and the data analysis will be carried out using a specialized software: SPSS 20.0. With this intervention we seek to improve the rates of breastfeeding by the time the baby is 6 months of age, in order to reach a 45% by reinforcing the self-sufficiency of the mothers. This type of intervention can be implemented on a large scale in those women who wish to breastfeed their babies, henceforth being introduced in healthcare programs YR 2017 FD 2017 LK http://riull.ull.es/xmlui/handle/915/23953 UL http://riull.ull.es/xmlui/handle/915/23953 LA es DS Repositorio institucional de la Universidad de La Laguna RD 26-dic-2024
