Based on the Relational View (Dyer and Singh, 1998), thework integrates mechanisms of the relational and competitive capabilities ina concept called ¿inter-organizational capabilities¿. Inter-organizationalcapabilities are composed of ¿trust¿ and mechanisms to ¿combinecomplementary resources¿, ¿invest in specific assets¿, ¿share information¿and ¿jointly solve problems¿. The measurement takes place in the Spanishfood industry (FI) in the context of the Supply Chain Management network.Other contribution of the present work is the theoretical study of thefood industry. In addition to improving the knowledge about interorganizationalrelationships, the study makes a theoretical review of thefood industry in general and the FI in particular. It describes thepeculiarities of the food industry and the movements that are taking placein it.The results confirm, with exceptions, the theoretical construct ¿interorganizationalcapabilities in a context of Supply Chain Managementnetwork¿. Other results are high levels of trust in relationships betweenpartners and the industry that, despite the current complex and competitiveenvironment, presents high levels of flexibility, responsiveness, quality andefficiency. Similarly, the investigation also discovers the capacity ofcompanies to manage knowledge. In this context, the results suggest a correct integration of the supplychain of the FI that confirm the effective implementation of the SupplyChain Management. Other conclusions are the dependence that theindustry has had, and still has on distribution, intensified in part by theexpansion of store brands.
