Polysiphonia sertularioides (Rhodophyta, Rhodomelaceae) A1 Afonso Carrillo, Julio A1 Rojas González, Berta A2 BotánicaEcología y Fisiología Vegetal A2 Botánica Marina AB The vegetative and reproductive morphology and the distribution in the Canary Islands of Polysiphonia sertularioides are examined. TheCanarian plants are characterized by axes with four pericentral cells withoutcortication, and are in agreement with previous descriptions of the species. It is present throughout the year, but in the Canaries seems to be mainly aspring-annual species that grow epilithically and it is locally abundant in theupper eulittoral of exposed localities. Spermatangial axes are subcylindricalor subconical, without sterile terminal cells, and they replacing a branch ofa trichoblast at the level of the first dichotomy. Mature cystocarps are urceolate, with polygonal and horizontally or irregularly arranged outer pericarpcells, not differentiated around the ostiole. Tetrasporangia are formed inslightly spiral series in terminal branches.
