AB Pharmaceutical biotechnology is focus on the development of new therapeutic, diagnostic or preventive biopharmaceuticals. Cyclodextrins (CDs) are cyclic oligossacharides known for their use as excipients to increment solubility and bioavailability of drugs. This review explains different biotechnological applications for beta-cyclodextrin (b-CD) derivatives such as vaccines and gene therapy vectors development as well as its research as novel antiviral agents. Hydroxypropyl-betacyclodextrin (HP-b-CD) has emerged as vaccine adjuvant with lower toxicity than alum. Moreover, cationic CDs polymers have demonstrated attractive properties that could improve efficiency of gene delivery systems. The recent pandemic made clear the importance of having access to broad spectrum antivirals and it has accelerated the research of new effective molecules like sulfonated CDs that have shown promising virucidal activity.
