One way to increase productivity consists in reducing losses caused by pests, mainly through the use of synthetic pesticides. The adverse effects of these pesticides - in spite of their efficacy -, have also awakened the urgent need to search for less harmful alternatives to these pesticides. In this work, we try to validate the traditional knowledge based on experience with the use of “salvia” as a pesticide. To achieve this, we have separated, by chromatographic techniques, different metabolites from the leaves of the S. canariensis L. and elucidated the structure of the major product by spectroscopic techniques, in order to determine its possible fungicidal effect, with the aim to investigate its potential application as a more respectful pesticide for humans and the environment.
