In recent years as the population age increases its prevalence rises. This population has greater comorbidity and polypharmacy and therefore a major risk of falls and fracture. Objectives: To detect if there is a higher degree of osteosarcopenia in patients who are admitted with an osteoporotic hip fracture and chronically consume benzodiazepines, analogs and/or muscle relaxants, in relation to those who do not take them. Method: We design a cross-sectional study, with 100 patients older than 65 years-old, admitted to a Hip Fracture Unit at the University Hospital La Candelaria. One group with chronic treatment with benzodiazepines or analogs and/or muscle relaxants and another group without treatment. Screening for sarcopenia was performed using the SARC-F questionnaire, strength measure using a JAMAR hydraulic dynamometer and malnutrition using the MUST screening test, and analytical parameters. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between sarcopenia and sedative drugs, Charlson comorbidity index and strength. Conclusions: Our results suggest that the chronic intake of sedatives might be a potential risk factor for osteosarcopenia. But further prospective, large-scale, randomized controlled studies that includes bone and muscle imaging measure techniques are warranted to establish our results. To stop unnecessary sedative medication is mandatory.
