T1 How SFL Can Inform Writing Instruction: The Grammar of Expository Essays

AB Systemic functional linguistics (SFL) offers useful tools foranalyzing texts and identifying grammatical and lexical elements thatare functional for achieving a particular text’s purposes. This articleanalyzes an English language learner’s expository essay, demonstratinghow the tools of SFL can illuminate areas of difficulty and neededgrowth. Through textual, interpersonal, and ideational analyses, it identifieselements of the academic register that are functional for the essaywriting task and examines how this particular student makes grammaticaland lexical choices that approximate that register. The article providesa set of questions that teachers can ask students to use to analyze theirown writing from a SFL perspective.
