This articleanalyzes an English language learner’s expository essay, demonstratinghow the tools of SFL can illuminate areas of difficulty and neededgrowth. Through textual, interpersonal, and ideational analyses, it identifieselements of the academic register that are functional for the essaywriting task and examines how this particular student makes grammaticaland lexical choices that approximate that register.
