RT info:eu-repo/semantics/article T1 Canadian Native Theatre: Humour, Magic and Reality A1 Pascual Soler, Nieves AB Despite Canadian aboriginals’ long-documented inclination towardsperformance, Native dramaturgy is a recent phenomenon. Born out ofthe feeling of having been wronged but, fortunately, not of the desire totake revenge, Native playwrights base their pieces on the collision betweenthe Euroamerican intellectual tradition and the mythic perspectiveof a quite sophisticated oral literature, which claims knowledge isborn from the revelation found in the marvellous. They imagine spacesin which common and uncommon things exist side by side, design playsfor the entertainment and education of Natives and non-Natives alike, and aim at encouraging a transnational solidarity. In the present paper Ianalyse Native drama in terms of themes and techniques, I argue it isinformed by the vision of Bertolt Brecht and the surrealism of SamShepard, and suggest that comedy is the most suitable genre for itsauthors’ purposes.
