AB This paper is an attempt to explain the effort carried out by Phillipsto trace the growth of a black Caribbean tradition in the English language,as well as to preserve the British and European ties that belongto his own personal development. An analysis and interpretation of CarylPhillips’s novels is presented from the perspective of two themes: theisland, associated with isolation and segregation, and slavery. This studyincludes his five novels to date and also his travel book The EuropeanTribe.
