AB The object of this paper is to study one of the ways in which the vitalslogan of young Stephen -silence, exile, and cunning- is transferred to thelanguage in the first two chapters of J.Joyce's A Portrait. In these chapters,the inner struggles of a young man uprooted from his natural environment isexpressed through certain linguistic and situational contrasts.
