AB This paper offers a contrastive analysis of the indefinite determiners otherand otro, when they are combined with the definitive article and the formsof the demonstrative pronouns. The deictic and anaphoric references of thelatter are discussed and contrasted with those of the former. Attention isalso given to else and its equivalents in Spanish that postmodify abstractpronouns with personal and non personal reference and a small number ofadverbs and quantifiers. They are restricted to this context and replaceother and otro. Our anaysis also includes a short discussion of the indefinitedeterminer demás, normally preceded by the definite article, and itsequivalents in English; they alternate with other and otro but always witha more restricted use and meaning.
