AB In the winter of 1498-1499, the two main rivers of Madrid, Manzanares and Jarama,overflowed their banks, causing damages to the city infrastructure. That is how it wastransmitted by some municipal documents about the natural catastrophe used by Madridcouncil to ask monarchy for a license to establish a new collection. The danger that couldarise from not being approved is alluded in these texts. Reality or strategy, Madrid municipalauthorities used several linguistic forms in order to persuade the monarchs to approve theirdemands.
