AB The opening of the new world brought about the disclosure of realities which had so farremained ignored or barely guessed at. Among them, the animal realm, and its representation,either in its material or symbolic significance, stands as a crucial chapter. This article willbe dealing with it at the outset of the western exploration process, in the areas encompassedbetween the Strait of Gibraltar and the Gulf of Guinea. We shall be considering travelnarratives that show the amazement of Europeans at the unexpected events and wondersdisplayed before their eyes. Such an enterprise unfolds broadly throughout the fifteenthcentury, comprising the three large areas of Macaronesia, Sahara and Guinea.
